Vintage/Antique Jewelry Mixed with Contemporary Jewelry

When you open your jewelry case, do you come across some sentimental older pieces of jewelry that once belonged perhaps to a grandparent and you were fortunate to receive it as an heirloom keepsake. Vintage and antique jewelry have their own unique styles and designs that were significant to their era. I personally love the Art Deco and Victorian periods.

The beauty of these older treasures is that they are as sought after today as they were back in their time. In other words, people are always on the lookout for quality vintage/antique pieces. The pieces may be gold, silver, gold filled, metal–but you can do so much by combining them with your contemporary jewelry.

Victorian parure in Classical style with ancient Roman coins

Victorian parure in Classical style with old Roman coins, wire works and lotus

A touch of history ... Victorian parure in Classical style with ancient Roman coins, wire works and lotus

(you can click the picture to get to its descriptive page)

Fashion in the last quarter of the 19th century was strongly inspired by Etruscan archaeological finds and the Pompeii excavations. Combine this with the impact on the fashion of Egyptian motives caused by opening of the Suez channel in 1870 and then take a good look at this magnificent parure. We see original antique coins, skilfully elaborated filigree work, big red stones and stylised lotus flowers.

It then becomes obvious that the jeweller who made this was not only an excellent craftsman but also very creative in combining the distinctive styles into a typical 19th Century Western European interpretation of different styles of ancient jewelry. To have the piece look even more authentic the good man in his enthusiasm incorporated no less then nine original ancient silver coins.

The age of the coins is around a stunning 2,000 years! It would be too much to describe them all but on the one hanging down in the center we recognize an elephant and the word CAESAR. Gaius Julius Caesar (July 13, 100 BC – March 15, 44 BC) was a Roman military and political leader. He played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. He also issued coins featuring images of elephants, suggesting that he favoured this interpretation of his name.

To our experts, who are used to see a lot of jewelry, it was the thrill of the month to find a silver parure from the Victorian era that has such a strong historical and classical expression. It is therefore that, although we hardly ever offer silver jewelry, we gladly make an exception for this parure. This, to us, is a "piece unique" and looks even more magnificent when being worn.

Antique jewelry object group: parures, necklaces, bracelets and earrings
Country of origin: unknown
Style: Victorian eclectism - (styles overview)
Style specifics: Typical for the Victorian era is the marriage of various sources of inspiration, in this case the Neo Egyptian style the classical style and the archaeological style.
Period: ca. 1880 (events and facts in 1880)
Source of inspiration: the antique world (Etruscans, Egypt, Greece and Rome)
Material: silver (except the system of the earrings that is gold) - (precious metals)
Technique: Filigree; this is in fact thin wire twisted into refined motifs. This technique demands very high skills and precision from the maker.
Precious stones: All stones in the parure are red strass or
paste used as ruby-imitation. In the necklace there are nine stones (eight round and one heartshape), the bracelet has one big heart shape and six smaller round brilliant cut stones. The earrings have one pear shaped stone each. - (precious stones)
Birthstones: Ruby is the birthstone (or month stone) for July. - (general birthstones explanation)
More background information on: neo egyptian, eclecticism, archaeological jewelry, eclecticism jewelry, parure, paste jewelry, Julius Ceasar
Hallmarks: No trace. - (general hallmarks info)
Condition: excellent condition - (our condition scale)
Dimensions: Circumference necklace approximately 45.00 cm (17.72 inch), circumference bracelet approximately 17.80 cm (7.01 inch), height earrings approximately 2.80 cm (1.10 inch)

Be Prepared for a Property Loss Before It Happens to You

Sometimes when a person finds out that all the contents of their home are not covered by their insurance policy in the event of a theft or property damage, it’s too late.

With the Christmas holidays nearing and the expected increase in burglaries, thefts and property damage, residents are warned not to assume anything when it comes to insurance coverage.

A useful tip from the Adin jewelry appraiser:
Make photocopies of your jewelry, they can be in color but simple black/white copies give a very good indication for the insurance company. Leave your rings on your hand when you make a copy but turn them with the top to the inside of your hand.

Working your way into the estate market

Curious about estate jewelry? I was, so this past June, I visited the Las Vegas Antique Jewelry and Watch Show. Since I am not an expert in this field, I asked appraiser Charles Carmona of Guild Laboratories in Los Angeles about the market.

I learned that estate jewelry is pre-owned jewelry, regardless of its age. It is attractive to many buyers since one can recapture the style and manufacturing quality of "jewelry the way it used to be," often at a fraction of the cost of a newly manufactured piece.

Vintage diamond pieces were a major presence at the Emmy Awards

Los Angeles -- For nominees and presenters attending the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, classic diamond looks, including simple studs, drop earrings and stacked diamond bangles, were the big winners of the night.

Risk-takers were notably few when it came to jewelry wardrobing, with attendees instead choosing more understated pieces. That's not to say, however, that the show lacked in glamour. Rather, television's biggest stars channeled an elegance of the Old Hollywood flavor.

Vintage diamond pieces were a major presence at the event, with 1920s and '30s pieces seen on Kyra Sedgwick and Glenn Close, and old mine- and cushion-cut diamonds seen on everyone from Holly Hunter to Mary-Louise Parker

CMP Asia renamed its jewellery fairs in Hong Kong

CMP Asia announced today that its Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair (JWF) is renamed as the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair (JGF) to better reflect the wider scope of the fairs. Both the June and September editions of the fair in 2009 will be using this new name.

"As the most important trade event for the global jewellery trade, the exhibit profile of the Fair is very different from 26 years ago when it started with the September edition," said Celine Lau, Director of Jewellery Fairs, CMP Asia. "Materials like diamonds, gemstones and pearls are of increasing importance alongside fine jewellery, so it is time to change the name of the Fair so that exhibitors and visitors know the profile of the Fair."

Launched in 1983, the September Fair is now Asia's largest international jewellery fair and one of the top three in the world. The September Fair is one of the few locally developed exhibitions that have grown to full international status. It has expanded from 100 exhibitors from 10 countries and regions, occupying 3,500 sqm of exhibition space in 1983 to 2,630 exhibitors from 44 countries and regions, on 81,000 sqm of exhibition space in 2008.

The fair has outgrown the full capacity of the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) for years with a long waiting list of new country pavilions, hundreds of new exhibitors and the expansion needs of existing exhibitors. When AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE), the second exhibition centre in Hong Kong opened in 2006, the fair began to use both venues to accommodate 2,500 exhibitors. Up to now, the Fair is still the only exhibition in Hong Kong that uses both venues.

As a result of the massive scale of the Fair, CMP Asia introduced in August a new sectorisation arrangement for the September Fair in 2009, which is similar to those of other large-scale global exhibitions. Next year, the HKCEC will showcase exhibitors with finished jewellery, while the AWE will display raw materials, such as loose diamonds, pearls and gemstones, and machinery. The major advantage of this approach is that it allows visitors to focus immediately on their areas of interest, enhancing efficiency in their visits which will directly benefit the exhibitors. "CMP Asia is the leading exhibition organiser in Asia with a 26-year track record of success in this market," added Celine Lau. "Given that Asia will soon become the world's biggest market for jewellery, we believe that the time is now to firmly establish the Fair's position as the number one exhibition of its kind in the world by introducing a precise product sectorisation."

The new initiative is well-received by the industry. The 2009 September edition of the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair will be expecting over 2,800 exhibitors, of which 47% will be fine finished jewellery exhibitors and 42% will be materials exhibitors, and taking up over 105,000 sqm of exhibition space. By then, the JGF at AsiaWorld-Expo will also become the largest Material Sourcing platform in Asia. Other key information about the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair:

Venue & Dates AsiaWorld-Expo

21-25 September, 2009
Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre

23-27 September, 2009

Exhibits Diamonds, Pearls, Gemstones and Technology
Fine Finished Jewellery

Exhibition Area 35,000 sqm
70,000 sqm

"The new fair name exactly reflects the exhibit profile of the Fair and helps to guide the 37,000 visitors to their target suppliers at the related venue for efficient sourcing," said Celine Lau.

The organiser has already pledged 50% more expenditure for a worldwide visitor marketing campaign to promote the September Fair 2009 and is confident that buyers will be well informed about the new arrangement. More frequent free luxury shuttle bus service travelling between two venues will also be arranged.

The June Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair will be held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from June 18 - 21, 2009.

A Very Female View of Ironman

... Look, honey, go buy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with Marilyn Monroe. She sings "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". One should try and learn from one's elders, Gwen. There is much wisdom in that song! Watch that movie several times until you fully grasp the concept.

Instead of buying that dress as your boss's birthday present to you, you should have bought jewelry. I'm not sure I would advise diamonds because Russia has enough diamonds to flood the world's market and drive the price of diamonds down to amethyst if DeBeers cannot keep a tight grip on them.

And don't go for the colored stones either because you never know when the stone's color has been enhanced by technology.

Go for good quality antique jewelry, emphasizing the artistry of the sculpture and design...

Sapphire sets record but many lots fail: Christie's

GENEVA (Reuters) – A large Kashmir sapphire ring set a world record at auction on Thursday night, fetching nearly $3.5 million, but half of the jewels on offer failed to sell in a market shaken by the financial crisis, Christie's said.

...

"People want to buy rarity. They want diamonds and color gemstones that are not easy to replace," said Rahul Kadakia, head of Christie's jewelry department for North America, who conducted part of the sale.

"A lot of diamonds didn't sell. The sale was based on the extreme high demand for jewels last summer," he added.

But vintage jewelry -- especially Cartier Art Deco pieces -- and natural pearls commanded strong prices, he said.

Vintage and signed jewelry and natural pearls went through the roof, even in this market," Kadakia said, pointing to several lots that quadrupled their pre-sale estimate.

Typical regional Dutch Victorian golden filigree earrings

(you can click the picture to get to its descriptive page)

A touch of history ... Typical regional Dutch Victorian golden filigree earrings.

Though filigree has become a special branch of jewel work in modern times, it was anciently part of the ordinary work of the jeweler. A. Castellani states, in his "Memoir on the Jewellery of the Ancients" (1861), that all the jewelry of the Etruscans and Greeks (other than that intended for the grave, and therefore of an unsubstantial character) was made by soldering together and so building up the gold rather than by chiselling or engraving the material.

In Holland this type of jewelry was rather popular too, especially for the many region distinctive styles Holland had till the end of the 19th Century. By the look at their jewelry it was possible to know a lot about the wearer, his or her marital status, religion, which part of the Netherlands they came from, even the little regions. There are still a few Dutch cities where you can find older women wearing their region specific dress but it's to be expected this will be gone within one or two generations.

Because of their delicate nature, not many of this type of earrings have survived over the years. Something we as antique jewelry dealers notice as we hardly ever find them anymore.

OBJECT GROUP : earrings
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe it is of Dutch origin.
STYLE : Victorian
PERIOD : 1870
MATERIAL : 14K yellow gold
TECHNIQUE : filigree and granulation - This jewel features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin golden wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques
demand very high skills and precision from the maker.
WEIGHT : 6.20 gram (3.99 dwt)

Engagement ring

A white gold wedding ring and a single-diamond, gold-banded engagement ring.

In Western tradition, an engagement ring is a ring worn by a woman indicating her engagement to be married. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left-hand ring finger, while in other countries, such as Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right-hand. By modern convention in countries such as the United States, the ring is usually presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride while or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage.

Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

In the United States and Canada today it is becoming more common, but still quite rare, that a woman will also buy an engagement or promise ring for her partner at the time of the engagement.

In Egypt, Brazil and many European countries, both the man and the woman usually wear engagement rings, most often in the form of matching plain bands of white, yellow, or rose gold. In these countries the man's engagement ring often also eventually serves as the wedding ring. Some men wear two rings, but this is rarer. The woman's wedding ring can sometimes have a precious stone. In Spain, the woman sometimes buys an engagement wristwatch for the man after accepting a marriage proposal.

2, 000-Year-Old Gold Earring Found in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (AP) -- A luxurious gold, pearl and emerald earring provides a new visual clue about the life of the elite in Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago. And its discovery was a true eureka moment for excavators.

The piece was found beneath a parking lot next to the walls of Jerusalem's Old City. It dates to the Roman period just after the time of Jesus, said Doron Ben-Ami, who directed the dig.

The earring was uncovered in a destroyed Byzantine structure built centuries after the piece was made, showing it was likely passed down through generations, he said.

Archaeologists came upon the earring in a corner while excavating the ruins of the building under a parking lot. ''Suddenly one of the excavators came up shouting 'Eureka!''' said Ben-Ami.

The find is eye-catching: A large pearl inlaid in gold with two drop pieces, each with an emerald and pearl set in gold.

Georgian jewelry (1714-1830)

French parure du cou maintenon cross pendant

(you can click the pictures to get to their descriptive pages)

The Georgian period spans more or less the reign of the four successive English kings George I, George II, George III and George IV between 1714 and 1830.

Georgian jewelry is rather rare as when time passed most worn out, was melted or taken apart and re-used for more modern designs. Materials like gold, silver and diamonds were very scarce and expensive and little consideration for fine craftmanship was taken with the "old stuff" when the owners wanted to wear their gold and diamonds according to the latest fashion in jewelry.

Most Georgian Jewelry available is from the later dates characterized by highly dimensional repousse. Floral and scroll motifs are typical of the period and the most common stones used are garnets, precious topaz, coral and early faceted diamonds set in silver.

During most of the 18th century, diamonds were set in closed silver-settings, a technique used because jewelers of that time believed that only a silver mounting could render the true beauty of a precious stone. They were also aware of the fact that silver jewelry often left black stains on clothing or skin, so they resolved the matter by coating the backs of the jewels in gold. Jewelry was custom designed to suit the diamonds that were available. Stones were never specially cut for the pieces. The most common cuts used in Georgian designs were rose-cuts and table-cuts.

Sotheby’s Revenue Down 11%

Sotheby’s reported operating revenues for the third quarter, ended Sept. 30, decreased 11 percent to $76 million. The auction house said the $9.1 million decline is largely due to a higher level of principal losses on auction guarantees, as well as lower private sale commissions and lower auction commission margins.

478-carat diamond lights up Dubai conference

Dubai, United Arab Emirates — A nearly 500-carat rough diamond recovered from a mine in Africa earlier this year made its public debut—and received its official name—during a press conference on Saturday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The stone, a massive 478-carat rock from the Letseng Mine in the African kingdom of Lesotho, is now known as "Leseli la Letseng," which means, "she is the light of Letseng."

During the press conference, Tusetso Sello-Mafatle, the government-appointed director of Letseng Diamonds (Pty) Ltd., a 30-70 percent partnership between the government of Lesotho and Gem Diamonds, said the diamond is a symbol of Lesotho's economic potential, and she hopes it will go a long way in promoting the country.

"She marks the power, the flawlessness of the diamonds from Letseng," Sello-Mafatle said of the stone.

When polished, Leseli la Letseng has the potential to produce a round diamond of about 150 carats, making it the largest polished round diamond in the world, dwarfing the current largest, which weighs in at about 100 carats, according to Clifford Elphick, chairman of Letseng Diamonds.

The stone is the 20th largest rough diamond ever recovered and is flawless, Elphick said, as far as they can tell at this point.

Blast from the past

Retro fashion is back in vogue once again, this time with some interesting twists.

Bell bottoms, bright coloured dresses and big sunglasses may be a throwback to the past. But if the current trends are anything to go by, retro fashion is back in a big way.

Falguni Peacock, for one, has even included retro influences in her latest collection under the label Spendthrift. “Retro has been in for a while now; it’s just that it’s now percolating down to the masses. But now is the time to go for bolder colours, bell bottoms and high-waist pants,” she notes.

Arshiya Fakih, on the other hand, feels that it all boils down to fashion being cyclical. “What goes around comes around; so yes, bright colours, funky jewellery and big sunglasses are the ‘in’ thing right now. Of course, the silhouette is very fitted, but the retro influence is very strong,” she explains.

Kate Moss Shares her Style Tips with Life & Style Weekly

The supermodel and Topshop designer tells Life & Style how anyone can look amazing.

  1. Fail-safe party item: a little black dress.
  2. The hot look of over-the-knee boots and a miniskirt is fine with bare legs if you’re in your teens, 20s or 30s. Anyone older should add opaque black tights.
  3. Don’t be afraid to alter vintage outfits. When I was 17, I found a panther-motif black dress at a New York flea market. Recently, I chopped off the bottom and used it as inspiration for the mini dress version in my Topshop line.
  4. A new hairstyle can transform your look. Be brave! Try a new hairstyle. It can inspire a new way of looking at your existing wardrobe.
  5. Make the most of your figure. If you have great legs, show them off with a short dress and heels or a fab pair of jeans. Wear what suits you rather than following trends. Create your own style!
  6. Never look like you tried too hard! Mismatching adds a personal touch
  7. Don’t do the catwalk look head to toe. Mix old with new and designers with high street. I wore a Chanel maxidress to my friend’s wedding with a 1930s blue velvet cape and huge Turkish hoop earrings, which gave the dress a totally different feel.
  8. Handbag essentials for hitting the town: keys, cash, black eyeliner
  9. Best jewelry for a night out: antique diamonds
  10. For evening, try unexpected outerwear-dress combos. Don’t be afraid to wear a battered leather jacket with a full-length gown or an extravagant, embroidered jacket with jeans and a T-shirt.

'America's oldest jeweler' to close shop

Easton, Pa. — Bixler's Jewelers, which calls itself "America's oldest jeweler," will close the doors of its downtown location in Easton, Pa., early next year, with store officials citing changing customer preferences and the current economic downturn as the impetus, The Express-Times has reported.

Bixler's began as a small jewelry and clock-making shop in 1785, and relocated a few times within Easton before settling in 1925 in its downtown Centre Square location.

Michelle Obama Style Predictions

If expectations are high for Barack Obama, they're no less soaring for his wife -- at least in a sartorial sense. After two decades of Bush and Clinton women -- for whom style was not a sixth sense -- the inarguably fashionable and seemingly fearless Michelle Obama has trend-watchers in a frenzy.

Tall and taut, with the broad shoulders and self-confidence to carry off whatever she wants, Obama has spent the past 21 months being compared to Jacqueline Kennedy. And, so far, Obama has acquitted herself well, showing off recession-friendly dresses from White House Black Market and pricey designs from edgy designers like Isabel Toledo, who she wore (left) last spring to a fundraiser with fashion industry heavyweights. What will she favor for the White House?

StyleList takes a look at her past -- and offers some predictions for the future. And for those who think clothes don't matter, remember the words of JFK as he introduced his wildly popular wife at a 1961 State Dinner at Charles de Gaulle's presidential palace. "I am the man," Kennedy said, "who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris."

Platinum, from trash to treasure

Platinum, from trash to treasure

Platinum has not always been considered to be the most precious metal to make jewelry from. Although there are some nice examples of platinum jewelry, people's attitude towards platinum has been different ...

The word "platinum" is derived from the Spanish "platina", which means "small silver". The first traces of platinum date from the Thebes epoch (about 7th century before JC), from when a small box was retrieved, adorned with a platinum ribbon.

During the 15th century, the Spaniards didn't like the little white granules that soiled their South American gold and used to throw them away. A platinum sample finally reached Europe in 1741, and was analyzed by sir Charles Wood, who didn't manage to melt it down. It was only when oxygen could be isolated (after its discovery in 1774), that people were finally able to increase the temperature of flames enough so as to melt platinum and really start to discover its particular properties: malleable, eternal brilliance, hardness superior to that of gold, inoxydability...

It was after the Napoleanic wars that the English managed to separate platinum from the other metals that were extracted from the platinum mines (palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, ruthenium). Around 1820, the Russians discovered huge ores in the Oural. Only from the beginning of the 20th century, platinum was being used in jewelry. Its use started to increase when scientists discovered its catalytic properties (its ability to speed up chemical reactions).

From then on platinum became a strategic industrial metal until the end of WWII. Today, the use of platinum is returning to the jewelry industry, but platinum has also a very wide range of industrial uses, including use in the treatment of some cancers.

A cute urban legend does its round: As platinum has not always been considered to be a precious metal, in Russia in the beginning of the 19th century, counterfeiters used platinum as the core for their "golden roubels", this because of platinum's high gravity. When, around 1870, platinum started to be recognized as a precious metal the price of it rose accordingly, it is told that roubels were then cut in half in the hope of finding platinum inside....

DDC Warns of Fraudulent GIA Reports !!!

David Abraham, vice president of the Diamond Dealers Club of New York, issued a statement Monday warning of a scam taking place with fraudulent GIA reports. The incidents were reported on JCKonline and by other organizations.

Abraham contacted www.Jewelersalert.com to issue his statement. It reads as follows:

Dear fellow members of the diamond and jewelry trade and industry worldwide, please Take immediate notice of the following urgent matter:

1.Counterfeit GIA Reports offered with HPHT diamonds or diamonds of a different Grade than described on the accompanying Counterfeit GIA Report, have been discovered in the marketplace.

2.Counterfeit GIA Reports with the exact GIA Report number and exact or similar grading information & details are being offered in the marketplace.

These Counterfeit GIA Reports are accompanying HPHTdiamonds or genuine diamonds of a slightly different, though nearly the same grade. A buying may erroneously purchase a stone assuming that because the GIA report number and grading appear to be the same, he is buying the actual item.

I urge you to protect yourself, your customers, suppliers and good name, and exercise utmost caution because of the above and report any irregularities to your bourse, trade or industry association.

You can help protect yourself by using one of the following methods recommended by the GIA.

GIA Report Check is a free online service that lets clients check the information contained in a GIA Diamond Report and GIA Diamond Dossier. Enter the diamond’s report number and carat weight, and Report Check returns all the grading information, including a cutgrade when available, that was issued for that diamond. Report Check currently serves only those diamonds graded from Jan 1, 2000 to the present. To access Report Check, go to http://www.gia.edu/reportcheck/

When in doubt or purchasing from an unknown source, the GIA recommends that the GIA Report Verification Service be used to confirm the authenticity of their GIA Diamond Grading Report and Diamond Dossier, or the information the report contains by simply requesting a free verification from GIA. People can submit their diamond along with its original report to the GIA Laboratory. The diamond will be re-assessed and the results of the new analysis will be returned to its owner, along with the diamond. Alternatively, the original grading report can be updated, meaning that the diamond can be submitted to the laboratory and fully graded again, including all of the screening steps for treatments.

Sincerely, David Abraham

Customer Watch: The Emotional Value of Jewelry

As I write this on Election Day, 2008, the results of a historical presidential election are being tallied, and the American people have voted in record-breaking numbers. It’s an emotional day for many, many people, and so what better topic for such a day than a focus on emotions.

It is said that jewelry is an emotional purchase. At times, emotion is inevitable because the jewelry relates to a very special occasion in one’s life, most notably the beginning of a marriage. At other times, emotions come into play simply because the jewelry is inherently so beautiful. I was told by a talented jewelry designer friend that I was literally whimpering when I saw the exquisite pieces in her collection. And there can be a sense of joy when one is able to commemorate a special achievement with the purchase of a signature piece of jewelry.

Rare blue diamond on the block

Democrats aren’t the only ones with a penchant for blue these days. Christie’s London is putting an historic blue diamond on the auction block on December 10th, and the little beauty is expected to fetch a whopping $15 million.

The 17th century gem weighs in at 35.56 carats and is known to collectors as the Wittelsbach diamond. The stone was originally given to Infanta Margarita Teresa by her father King Philip IV of Spain on the occasion of her engagement to her uncle, Leopold I of Austria. Um...ew.
