Woman Says “Yes” Under the Eiffel Tower with Art Deco Ring from Peter Suchy Jewelers!

At Peter Suchy Jewelers we are always excited when one of our rings is used to pop the question. We were also happy to help John “secretly” purchase the perfect ring to say “Will you marry me?” to Chloe under the Eiffel Tower in Paris! But this proposal took some tricky planning.

Chloe Shops

Women love to peruse jewelry and in Chloe’s case, her passion for Art Deco jewelry always had her browsing the World Wide Web for unique Art Deco jewelry. One day, Chloe came across a stunning emerald cut diamond ring—Art Deco style right from our eBay store.

The ring has a center stone of 2.09 carats in an Art Deco Emerald step cut with two straight step cut baguette diamonds with a combined total carat weight of .45 on each side. Set in platinum, it was Chloe’s dream ring.
The ring obsession began and Chloe’s insistence on purchasing the ring was continually knocked down by John.

“You’re crazy!” John told her. “I am not, not buying that ring!”

Determined to have it, Chloe called Peter Suchy Jewelers and was told the ring had been sold. Sadly, Chloe politely told us she understood and thanked us.

John Plans

When a man plans a marriage proposal as a surprise, no one we know has topped this secretly-planned proposal by John. After swearing he would not buy the ring and consoling Chloe on her attempts to purchase the ring on her own—John planned—and planned.

Once John saw the love of his life Chloe’s eyes brighten in delight when she first saw the ring and her subsequent obsession, John secretly called Peter Suchy Jewelers and asked if he could arrange to purchase the ring and have us keep it “on ice” for a few months. He also instructed us to tell Chloe if she called, the ring had been sold.

We are romantics at heart so we instantly agreed! John knew this Art Deco diamond ring was Chloe’s desire and so after purchasing the ring, John had more surprises up his sleeve.

A Trip to Paris!

Chloe and John Happily Engaged!
John and Chloe had been planning a trip to visit Paris and London for a few months—during the secret ring purchase—and John knew he would be “popping the question” in Paris—the most romantic city in the world.

Again John dug into his secret bag of secrets and although Chloe thought they’d be visiting London after Paris—she actually viewed the fake travel itinerary—John rearrange the trip and its events. Instead, he planned a romantic picnic under the Eiffel Tower at sunset.

Out came a stand-in ring with plane tickets not to London, but to New York City—just a hop away from our showroom in Stamford, Connecticut. Of course Chloe said yes and was swooped away on a plane to New York City. After landing at the Newark Airport, John arranged for a private limo to pick them up and drive them straight to our showroom.

As the limo pulled up, Chloe recognized our jewelry store’s name and immediately broke into tears. John likes to say Chloe went into “complete hysteria” when she saw he had secretly purchased the Art Deco diamond ring, especially since she was told the ring had been sold months ago—it fit her perfectly.

Swept again away into the waiting limo, the couple headed to New York City for two days and a stay at one of New York’s exquisite hotels. Still, John had not forgotten his promise to take Chloe to London and this time produced genuine travel documents so they could finish their European trip as planned only this time, the couple was engaged and love was in the air—literally!

This dream proposal was exciting, exhilarating and a well-kept secret by John and Peter Suchy and his staff. We are happy we were able to be part of this “secret proposal” but above all, we’re overjoyed Chloe said, yes, John’s plans worked out as planned, and that Chloe now wears the Art Deco diamond ring she always wanted.

We just have one question—when’s the wedding?

Once upon a time there was a sad and lonely ring, suffering much from incomprehension. Scornfully he was called, “ugly duck ring”. Spending much of his time alone, hidden in a drawer. But one day he wandered from his house and found its way to The Garden of Adin, where he was understood and adored for its beauty. There he was called “the snugly luck ring”. And since then the snugly luck ring happily waits there for someone to give him a new warm and happy home.

Flowers are love's truest language

Magnificent Art Deco engagement ring with rubies and diamonds

(But sometimes even the truth needs a little help)

Flowers are part of our daily life. For virtually every event we have assigned a special flower. Flowers for love, church, church graveyard, marriage, etc. In the 16th century inn's use to have a branch or flower stalk as signboard which later often changed only into the name of a specific tree or flower. Many times one finds flower gardens in mythological sceneries. The allegoric use of flowers is uncountable: attributes for the springtime, the youth, the sunrise, the rhetoric, the virtue etc. Lots of countries carry a flower as national symbol: Hungary had the tulip and Scotland the thistle, etc.

On our site we have dedicated a page to flower symbolism where you can read much more about the symbolism behind the use of floral motifs. Enjoy!

What Do Wedding Rings Speak About?

There is a rich history behind how wedding rings got introduced in the Christian way of life. It wasn't until the days of Pope Innocent III that couples were asked to wear two rings, one during engagements and the other while finally being married. Families offered rings just to seal engagements prior to this historical pronouncement by the Pope. He also asked the engaged couples to observe a waiting period before they could finally marry. These orthodox dictates slowly grew into colorful traditions, as Christianity traversed across the world over a period of many centuries.

Wedding rings are normally placed on left ring fingers of couples from the USA, France, Sweden and the UK. They are placed on right ring fingers however, in the case of Germany, Spain, India, and Chile. Interestingly, while Jews traditionally place wedding rings on their left hands, like the orthodox Christians, they prefer wearing it on the right ones after being married. There are also varying for the period when one of the partners has died. This universally gets deemed to be the end of any wedding concerned in most societies. However, much of this differentiation of norms might stem from the fact, which part of the world you were looking at.

A hardened alloy of Gold, Bismuth, Tin and Copper is often made use of in manufacturing wedding rings. Sometimes Platinum, Nickel and Titanium are also introduced varying results. Platinum is mixed up with white gold for manufacturing a separate class of Platinum wedding rings. Similarly Titanium and Tungsten carbide are also used to produce durability, affordability, varying textures and shades of eye-catching ring designs.

However, less costly metals like Silver, Brass and Copper are scarcely used compared to the more expensive ones due to the former's corrosiveness. Aluminum and some other toxic metals are hardly ever made use of in the manufacture of either wedding rings or similar other ornaments. However, the widest and cheapest known alloy of modern world, stainless steel, is surprisingly gaining ground as one of the options these days. Its durability, which is at par with that of Platinum and Titanium, could be attributed for this wondrous growth.

Retail shops may normally quote wedding rings at $600 and more, but could easily be procured at lower rates from various online resources. A brief look at some of the existing jewelry sites might how they were selling most jewelry items at a reduced cost, including those from the latest wedding rings. These websites could easily meet with the demands of all market segments, starting from the casual jewelry buyer to the seeker of high-end ornaments.

Diamond Engagement Rings: A History

Ever wondered how the diamond engagement ring became the superstar of the jewelry world? The Jewelry Insider offers a brief history for your reading pleasure.

'Tis the season to pop that fateful question fellas...

Diamond Engagement Rings: A History

Because of their beauty, strength and durability, diamonds for centuries have symbolized the eternal love of two people that have pledged to join together in marriage.

The actual tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring as a promise of marriage is thought to have started in 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria presented Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring. This practice became a trend among royalty and the wealthy, and the rest of the world's upper classes began to embrace it over the next few centuries.

But giving a diamond engagement ring as a symbol of betrothal really started to become an established, widespread tradition once the gems became more accessible and affordable to the public. And that all started in 1870 with the discovery of diamond mines in South Africa. These new sources flooded the market and led to the creation of the De Beers conglomerate to control the worldwide diamond supply. During these early decades of the De Beers dynasty, diamond sales flourished in Europe, the United States and other key world markets.

By the late 1930s, however, the United States and much of Europe was in the wake of the Depression, and Europe was bracing for the start of World War II - and demand for diamonds had plummeted to an all-time low. Thus, De Beers diamond mogul Sir Ernest Oppenheimer sent his son Harry to New York to meet with the N.W Ayer advertising agency. The plan was to transform America's taste for small, low-quality stones into a true luxury market that would absorb the excess production of higher-quality gems no longer selling in Europe. The result of Ayer and young Oppenheimer's efforts was a campaign - led by the enduring "A Diamond is Forever" slogan - that helped turn the United States into the premier market for the world's supply of gem-quality diamonds. The successful campaign also cemented the diamond's status as the engagement ring stone of choice in America.

Here are some other interest historical facts related to the engagement ring:
  • The tradition of placing both the engagement ring and wedding band on the fourth finger of the left hand stems from a Greek belief that a certain vein in that finger, the vena amoris, runs
  • directly to the heart.
  • In the Middle Ages, men often kept a betrothal ring suspended from the band of their hats, ready to give to their chosen maid.
  • Posy rings, which were inscribed with love poems and messages, were popular betrothal rings from theMiddle Ages until Victorian times.
  • A popular engagement ring style during the Renaissance was called the "Gimmel", or twin, ring.
  • The ring was typically made of two (or three) interlocking rings: one worn by the bride-to-be, and another by the groom-to-be (and sometimes a third worn by a witness). All three parts were reunited into one to become the wedding ring on the day of marriage. Martin Luther and Catherine Bora were wed with an inscribed gimmel ring in 1525.
  • The smallest engagement ring on record was given to two-year-old Prince Mary, daughter of Henry VIII, on the event of her betrothal to the infant Dauphin of France, son of King Francis I, in 1518. Mary's tiny gold ring was set with a diamond.
  • A diamond cluster ring in the shape of a long pointed oval was popular as an engagement ring during the time of Louis XVI (1754-1793), and remained fashionable for 150 years afterward.
  • Hearts were popular motifs for engagement and wedding rings during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Such rings often combined rubies (signifying love) and diamonds (signifying eternity).
  • Despite the diamond's growing hold on the bridal market, colored stone rings were still quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
  • Often, the first letter of the stones within the setting spelled out the name of the giver or a word (for example, "dearest" would be represented by diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, epidote, sapphire and turquoise).
  • Queen Victoria's (1819-1901) engagement ring was in the form of a serpent. The snake motif was believed to be a symbol of good luck.
  • The Tiffany, or solitaire, setting was introduced in the late nineteenth century.
  • The "princess ring," a type of English engagement ring sporting three to five large diamonds in a row across the top, was popular in the United States in the early twentieth century. The
  • three-stone style has enjoyed a major comeback recently.
  • In the early part of the twentieth century, platinum was the metal of choice for engagement rings because of its strength and durability in holding a diamond. However, platinum was declared a strategic metal during World War II, and its usage was restricted to military purposes. This led to the rise of both yellow and white gold in bridal jewelry.
  • The famous "A Diamond is Forever" campaign established many of today's standards for diamond engagement rings, including the "two months' salary" guideline - which basically says that a prospective groom should plan to spend two months' salary on an engagement ring for his bride-to-be.

Engagement ring

A white gold wedding ring and a single-diamond, gold-banded engagement ring.

In Western tradition, an engagement ring is a ring worn by a woman indicating her engagement to be married. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left-hand ring finger, while in other countries, such as Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right-hand. By modern convention in countries such as the United States, the ring is usually presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride while or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage.

Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

In the United States and Canada today it is becoming more common, but still quite rare, that a woman will also buy an engagement or promise ring for her partner at the time of the engagement.

In Egypt, Brazil and many European countries, both the man and the woman usually wear engagement rings, most often in the form of matching plain bands of white, yellow, or rose gold. In these countries the man's engagement ring often also eventually serves as the wedding ring. Some men wear two rings, but this is rarer. The woman's wedding ring can sometimes have a precious stone. In Spain, the woman sometimes buys an engagement wristwatch for the man after accepting a marriage proposal.
