What Are Mabe or Mobe Pearls?

Have you ever wondered why jewelers take perfectly rounded valuable pearls, cut them in half and then place them inside a setting? After all, it would seem to be counterproductive to incur the expense of buying high-grade spherically perfect pearls only to destroy the very attribute that determines a large portion of the value. The answer is very simple: jewelers use mabe pearls when working with flat settings. They do not cut up the perfect pearls they would place on a strand.

The animal frequently used in the production of the cultured mabe pearl is the black-winged pearl oyster (Pteria penguin). Unlike the spheres commonly associated with pearls, mabes are only half-rounded with a flat back. Not surprisingly, they are perfect for rings and pendants, where their flat backs are essential for fitting into the settings.

Seeding for this type of pearl differs from the typical process. To ensure the flattened back, a hemispherically shaped irritant is placed between the oyster’s body and interior shell. As a result, the nacre surrounds the irritant on one side to form the half-round dome. It is interesting to note that – in the trade – the still-implanted mabe is oftentimes referred to as a blister pearl. This is due to the fact that in many cases, the irritants are actually placed on a blister pack that is then placed inside the oyster. This allows for a harvest of multiple mabes.

Since jewelers must remove the artificial nucleus from the back of the mabe and replace it with resin, these pearls are considerably less expensive than their perfectly rounded cousins. Of course, when the back of the pearl is placed flush against the back of a setting, this detail is immaterial. In fact, it is difficult to tell a mabe pearl in a setting from a round one that has been worked on to fit into the same setting.

While the size of the pearl is determined by the size of the irritant that is placed inside the mollusk, there is still some variation in available sizes. It is not unheard of that 8mm mabes have been added to jewelry. For those who prefer bigger sizes, there are 16mm pearls that fit the bill. Experts engaged in the trade generally base the size of the pearls on current and anticipated market trends. If blister packs are used, the typical size of the pearl is between 10mm and 12mm at the time of harvest.

This ring is made around 1910 in a style that is known as "The Belle Époque". The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I.

Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms.

In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

Interest in Men’s Jewelry Is on the Rise!

Decades ago, the fashionable man wore cufflinks, tie bars, rings and carried pocket watches. Somehow over the decades, men’s jewelry sort of dropped out of sight expect for perhaps those large gold chains and a Rolex watch here and there. Today, however, the interest in men’s jewelry is on the rise and here at Peter Suchy Jewelers, we’ll tell you why.

Why Men’s Jewelry Is Popular Again

Hannah Connorton wrote a great article about men’s jewelry for National Jeweler and asked some celebrity stylists and jewelry designers why they think there’s a recent uptrend in men’s jewelry fashions.

One such expert Michael O’Connor says of men’s jewelry, “I think the jewelry category for men is really on the precipice of becoming one of the largest-growing categories over the next 10 to 15 years.” Why the resurgence? Most likely says O’Connor, the resurgence is due to celebrity male influencers like Jay-Z, the Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber and Johnny Depp. These male celebs have shown wearing different types of jewelry and mixing and matching metals and stones is okay for the
male gender.

O’Connor also says, “Men who are even mildly fashion driven are getting great cues from fashion influences such as celebrities.” The jewelry for men today—and decades ago, has been worn as a sort of status symbol that a man has “made it” and is successful—the Rolex, the pocket watch, the cufflinks, or today’s diamond earrings.

Even men’s watches and cufflinks of today are leaning toward pendants and bracelet styles and metal is also a big influencer.

Platinum is the metal of choice for the trendy man and favorite designers include Oscar Heyman, Alexandra Mor and Scott Kay. With Platinum, O’Connor says, “it can be brushed or blackened to achieve a masculine effect.”
