7 of the Biggest Celebrity Engagement Rings!

Marketing departments of prominent diamond jewelers have campaigned long and hard to get men into a generous mood when purchasing an engagement ring. The going wisdom suggests that a man should spend an amount that equals three months of his gross salary. While this may result in the purchase of a nice piece for the average customer service manager, what happens when the future groom is a celebrity? The answer is simple: the bride-to-be joins the 10-carat-and-above-club and wears a huge rock on her ring finger.

Blake Lively

Famous for her acting in the “Gossip Girl” and the “Green Lantern,” Blake Lively accepted a pink oval diamond engagement ring from Ryan Reynolds. There has been plenty of speculation about the worth of the jewel. Onlookers have parsed the beauty of the gem from photographs and suggest that it probably carries a price tag of about $2 million. Detractors claim that the ring is a paltry seven karats and is most likely much cheaper.

Mariah Carey

Pink must be a favorite among the high rollers, because Mariah Carey got this type of diamond as well. Weighing in at 10.2 carats, the Jacob Arabo creation that Nick Cannon gave to her is worth an estimated $2.5 million. There is some dispute about the weight of the ring; onlookers in the know have pegged it as a 17-carat affair.

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor, the actress who graced the silver screen for decades and became a legend during her lifetime, collected her fair share of engagement rings. Richard Burton once gave the 33.19-carat Krupp Diamond, but it did not count as an engagement ring. Of course, there was the 29.4-carat ring presented to her by Michael Todd.

Beyonce

Prior to marrying in 2008, rapper Jay-Z spent six years dating R&B singer Beyonce Knowles. The Lorraine Schwartz wedding ring cost an estimated $5 million. Then again, he could not skimp too much, seeing that he presented Beyonce with an 18-carat ring for their engagement.

Paris Hilton

For their six-month engagement in 2005, Greek socialite Paris Latsis presented his American counterpart, Paris Hilton, with a 24-carat ring. The stone was a lovely canary diamond. Although the relationship did not last, the ring is sure to stick around for a while.

Khloe Kardashian

Khloe Kardashianmarried Lamar Odom in 2009. The whirlwind courtship reportedly only took 30 days before the socialite said her “I do.” Sporting a 12.5-carat ring might have convinced her that Odom meant business in this short time.

Kate Middleton

Quite possibly the most famous engagement ring is the one currently on the finger of the former Kate Middleton. Wearing the 18-carat ring that used to belong to Princess Diana, Prince William’s mother, this jewel is priceless due to association with the British royal family in general and the People’s Princess in particular.

Every once in a while a celebrity wants something a little different for an engagement ring—or they are surprised by one when proposed to. We found some rings given to celebs as engagement rings that we particularly liked here at Peter Suchy Jewelers.

Ruby Ring for Jessica Simpson

If you’re a Jessica Simpson fan, you know her birthday falls in July so fiancé Eric Johnson stepped outside the box and gave her a five-carat ruby engagement ring spotted with diamonds. According to People Magazine, the ring was created by celebrity jewelry designer Neil Lane and includes side pear-shaped diamonds. Lovely we think because in our store, there’s nothing better than a vintage ruby ring!

Dangling Diamond Ring for Rebecca Romijn

According to InStyle.com, Jerry O’Connell may have outdone all the other celebs out there when he gave Rebecca Romijn a six-carat yellow diamond engagement ring—but there’s a twist to this ring. Once pregnant, Rebecca wanted to change the setting and asked jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz to help her come up with a stunning new design. Now the diamond “dangles” from the ring—something we think is very sexy. Well done!

Sapphire Ring for Elizabeth Hurley

Zap2it.comrevealed an awesome image of Elizabeth Hurley’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring. Given to her by cricket-playing fiancé Shane Warne, the ring is in a platinum setting and with a nine-carat sapphire and two-carat trillion cut diamonds on each side. Stamford, CT, Actor Proposes on Stage!

Is there anything more beautiful than a well done marriage proposal? Kevin Thompson, a Stamford actor who played Cassio in Shakespeare on the Green’s performance of “Othello,” certainly ensured that the audience and his bride-to-be were treated to a perfectly executed proposal. She, Julia Maggiola, had just finished playing her part as Desdemona and never saw it coming.

As noted by the Stamford Advocate, the clearly romantic Thompson had neatly dotted his i’s and crossed his t’s. A week previously, he had formally asked Maggiola’s parents for her hand in marriage. With the parental blessing assured, Thompson squared things with the show’s director before setting an unforgettable curtain call into motion.

What made this Shakespeare on the Green performance so special for Thompson and Maggiola, who had been dating for about four years? It was on this particular stage at curtain call that Thompson fell in love and recognized Maggiola as his soul mate.

Gentlemen, it is here that you might want to listen up and take note. Being romantic might come naturally to Mr. Thompson, but it may not be your forte. Not only did he plan his marriage proposal to take place at the exact place where the couple first met, but he also had an engagement ring ready to go. This particular ring had been in his possession for about a year, which clearly shows that Thompson is an excellent and patient planner.

Of course, the Stamford marriage proposal is not the first time this year that an actor has taken to the stage to propose. The BBCreported that a Welsh National Opera singer did the same thing in May. Jon Roche and Polly Greenwood met in opera school and had been dating for nine years. After a dress rehearsal performance of Lohengrin, the tenor used the time of the curtain call as the occasion for his proposal.

It is interesting to note that Mr. Roche, too, is clearly very much a fan of meticulous planning. Giving some thought to the perfect time and locale for the marriage proposal, he, too, had a ring hidden in his costume. Inspired by the fact that the traditional wedding march is actually a piece of the Lohengrin music, he ensured the opera company’s approval before proceeding.

For the man in need of inspiration for a great wedding proposal, the blueprint is clear. Find a romantic place – where you first met or where a particular aspect of the venue reminds of weddings – and come prepared with an engagement ring. Get the approval of the venue owner or operator, get a parental blessing, and you are on your way. Ladies, you might want to print out this blog post and let your significant other find it. Who knows, you may be treated to a romantic proposal as well.

The first lab-produced gem stones were already made in the 19th Century !Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil was a French chemist (1856-1913). He invented a type of blowpipe (chalumeau) with which he was the first to lab produce rubies. This process is also sometimes referred to as 'flame fusion'. His results were published in 1904. The apparatus is still used today (sometimes in banks of several hundred units) to make synthetic varieties of corundum and other synthetic gemstones.
