May in the Garden

Nothing more beautiful than a blossom
after the rain . . .

A delicate fabric of bird song
Floats in the air,
The smell of wet wild earth
Is everywhere.
Oh I must pass nothing by
Without loving it much,
The raindrop try with my lips,
The grass with my touch;
For how can I be sure I shall see again
The world on the first of May
Shining after the rain?

Gold Victorian ring set with garnet and with hidden space that can be closedSilver gilded bohemian garnets bangle with hidden placeGold Victorian belt ring with hidden space

Take these pieces of antique jewelry, nothing special you would say. And we would be the first to agree. But they do have something special, they are so called poison rings and bangle. Jewelry like this (mostly rings) have been used throughout history to carry perfume, locks of hair, devotional relics, messages and other keepsakes and even in a very rare occasion, poison.

It is thought that this type of jewelry originated in ancient days of the Far East and India where it replaced the practice of wearing keepsakes, talismans and other items in pouches around the neck. The wearing of these poison rings was so practical that it spread to other parts of Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean before reaching Western Europe in the Middle Ages. By then the rings were also part of the “holy relic trade.”

For Keeps Sake Scrapbook Store and Wendy Vecchi

I have visited For Keeps Sakes Scrapbook Store
several times with Tammy and have always enjoyed the
store.  They have a lot of great stuff!  It is probably one
of the best known scrapbook stores in the St. Louis
area.  This was my first time for doing a class with
them; and actually, the first time doing a class with
Wendy Vecchi.  Tammy and I did both classes and
it was a super fun day!  It for sure won't be my last.
These photos are some of Wendy's beautiful art that
was displayed in the store. Very inspiring!

Her flowers are so gorgeous!

Here we are busy, busy, busy "Making Art" as Wendy
says.  I didn't get photos of anyone's book, but you
can scroll down for a photo of Wendy's from an
earlier post--and I will post mine later.  For our Mini Art
book we used the Maya Road Mini Album kit.  It is a
"ready-to-have-fun" chipboard book, including all the fun
little chipboard embellishments.  We used most of the
new Tim Holtz Distress Inks on this project.  I love
them all, but right away, my new favorites became
Rusty Hinge and Wild Honey.

Making Art with Wendy Vecchi

We chose from this selection of shoe lasts for our
project.  I spied one with my maiden name "Stewart" on
it and selected it for my art.  (Photo borrowed from
For Keeps Sake -- I never thought of getting a photo,
but how awesome is this!!)

After we each selected a shoe last, we then selected
from an assortment of stamped images on grunge
paper of Wendy's Studio 490 designs, medals, die
cuts, great findings of all kinds.  When I first looked
at all this, I thought I have no idea where to start.  But
once I got started, I
didn't think about it--I just played!
After everyone finished, they were all placed on a
table in front for display.  It was unbelievable how many
creative ideas everyone had! Each one turned out so
different, even though we started with a lot of the same
materials.

Tammy's is the first on the left.  I loved how she did it!
Mine is the 2nd from the left.

Thank you, Wendy!  What an great project!

Red Lead Paper Works

As soon as I got in town, Tammy and I headed here.
She has been to the store lots of times -- this was my first
visit.  The owners are Chris Schwartz and Sharon Wisely,
and you can tell they love what they do.  The store was
amazing! Lots of stamps, collage sheets, trinkets, and
vintage goodies for mixed media or altered art, artist
trading cards, etc. -- including
all kinds of inspiring art
throughout the store.  Besides the store, you can follow
their blog, visit their store online, and/or sign up for email

Product Share . . .

I received a photo of this adorable pin as part of an email from
Red Lead Paper Works this week.  The little dress was made
from their Story Rubber Stamps.  I just fell in love with it!
That sparked my need to visit today.  Red Lead Paper Works is
already one of Tammy's favorites, so it will just be a "first time"
for me.  The stamp they used for this project is displayed below.
It is a rubber cling stamp (very reasonably priced, too).
Cute, huh?
This cute idea was posted on Red Lead's blog a
couple of days ago using the stamps below.
Another stamp I gotta have!

Heading for Belleville . . .

I am so excited! Tomorrow I am going to Belleville to spend the weekend with Tammy, and it is going to be so much fun! As soon as I can get there, we are going to Red Lead Paperworks. I have never been there, but follow their blog and store happenings all the time. They have so much cool stuff, it will be hard to get out of there with any money left.

Then Saturday, we are going to spend the day at For Keeps Sake in St. Louis for two classes with Wendy Vecchi. Below are the projects we will be doing --cool huh?

PUBLICATION SHARE . . .

I love what is happening with Stampers' Sampler magazine! It has been newly redesigned and revamped. I liked it before -- but love it now! There is loads of great photography of stamped art, ideas, and plenty of close-up photos for showing detail. This issue (April/May) is featuring artist Wendy Vecchi. There are 6 pages featuring Wendy and her work (a couple of "teaser" pages below). Congrats Stampington and Amanda Crabtree for a cool magazine.

Pure Art Nouveau, nothing more, nothing less

Pure Art Nouveau

Magnificent Art Nouveau pendant signed E.Dropsy with sliding mirrorsMagnificent Art Nouveau pendant signed E.Dropsy with sliding mirrorsMagnificent Art Nouveau pendant signed E.Dropsy with sliding mirrors

nothing more, nothing less

The name Art Nouveau most of us know but depending on the country the style has some different names. In Germany it was called "Jugendstil", after a magazine called Die Jugend (The Youth), in Holland "Slaoliestijl" (salad oil style) after an advertising for salad oil and in Italy "Floreale" or "Stile Liberty" (after the London store that featured it).

One of the joys of our métier is that every now and then we stumble upon a piece of absolute beauty. As was the case this week when the depicted Art Nouveau pendant was being offered to us. It's a sort of locket except there is no place for pictures because the original mirrors are still inside. Pure Art Nouveau, made in France, bigger then it appears on the picture (height 6.10 cm or 2.40 inch), fully signed E.Dropsy and of a quality that we hardly see. Look and enjoy!

Museum director finds treasure

Museum director finds treasure

Magnificent Art Deco engagement ring with rubies and diamonds

The “Four in a Row” dream ring

Once upon a time... in the Garden of Adin, a game was being played. The players, a gnome and a pixie, had several precious stones each, distinguished by color. They took turns in dropping these stones in one of the non-filled places by granting wishes that people dreamed. The pixie won by placing four brilliant cut diamonds consecutively in a line, which ended the game.

A recent American study has irrefutable concluded that the source of the so called "Four in a row" game has to be found in this Garden of Adin story.

When the ring was being offered, Mr. Elkan Wijnberg, conservator of the Adin Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts, was there in a flash to preserve this “four in a row” dream ring for his museum where it is being offered in the museum-shop to its clientele.
