This 1950s 14k white gold ideal cut diamond dome ringis so sparkly you will make a statement wearing it. We Match Our Jewelry to Actress Jean Harlow’s Jewelry

The world lost the actress Jean Harlow too soon—she died at only 26 years of age from acute nephritis (kidney failure) on June 7, 1937. Although there are myths Harlow’s mother refused medical treatment for Jean, in reality, the actress contracted Scarlet Fever when she was only 14 which overtime, damaged her kidneys. 

Born on March 3, 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri, her lifelong nickname was “The Baby.” At birth, Jean’s given name was Harlean Harlow Carpenter. Weighing in at a whopping nine pounds, Jean’s parents were Jean Poe Harlow Carpenter and Mont Clair Carpenter who was a successful dentist.

At the age of sixteen, Jean ran off to California and married then boyfriend Charles McGrew III—a marriage that would only last from 1927 to 1929. On July 2, 1932, Jean married Paul Bern who committed suicide in 1932. Jean’s final marriage was to Harold Rosson in 1933 who she divorced in 1934.

Known as The Blonde Bombshell, Jean Harlow made six films with Clark Gable but got her big break in 1930 with the release of Howard Hughes’ film epic Hell’s Angels. After Hell’s Angels, Hughes sold her contract to MGM for $60,000 and there she had quite the career—she was in more than 40 movies, although some of those were only walk-on, un-credited roles.

Some of her best films included Platinum Blonde (1931), Red Dust (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), China Seas (1935), Wife vs. Secretary(1936) and Saratoga—her final film in 1937. The movie was not finished before her death and a stand-in was used to complete the film. Clark Gable said of filming the end of Saratoga that he “felt like he was in the arms of a ghost.”

An avid animal lover, Jean had many dogs and although racy at the time, once said, “Underwear makes me uncomfortable. And, besides, my parts have to breathe.”

The world got its chance to remember Jean Harlow in 1960 when she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame but the camera loved her and the humor and wit she showed on the screen is still enjoyed by old film lovers everywhere.

Diamond and Sapphire Earrings

 

Jean’s diamond and pear-shaped blue sapphire earrings were stunning. Each earring boasted a 1.98 carat sapphire and 6 carats of diamonds. These dangle earrings were not only lovely, they were the perfect match for her blue/green eyes.

Our match to these earrings? Our estate 1940 hinged beaded bezel set platinum sapphire and diamond dangle earrings. We call these earrings “drop dead gorgeous” and they contain two pear-shaped sapphires (5.59 carats) and two round diamonds (.91 carats).

Diamonds at Dusk Ring

 

Jean wore this stunning 3.99 carat synthetic dusky emerald ring surround by 18 clear (CZ) diamonds with rhodium plating. Simply shimmering!

Our match to these stunning earrings? Our vintage 1940 3.50 carat green emerald and 16 round diamond ring. Total carat weight for the diamonds is .50 and the ring is set in 18k two-tone gold. We say our vintage ring will wow anyone who wears it!

Oh how this 4 carat diamond ring must have shined on Jean Harlow’s hand. The center stone contains one clear (CZ) diamond which is surrounded by 62 round cut clear (CZ) diamonds totaling .8 carats and rhodium plating.

Our match to this diamonds on diamonds ring? Our vintage round diamond halo ring. This unique ring contains  one brilliant cut center diamond (.77 carats), two brilliant cut diamonds (.36 carats) and 90 round diamonds (.80 carats). Definitely diamonds on diamonds we say!

What Steps Should You Take to Sell Vintage Jewelry?

Your vintage jewelry is at least 20 to 25 years old. It may not have reached 100 years yet, which is the marker for antique jewelry, but it is old enough to quality for the vintage market. Selling these pieces is a bit more complicated than other estate jewelry, in part because there is a good chance that plenty of pieces are still in circulation. Nevertheless, you can make money with vintage jewelry if you know a few tricks.

Check the source. If a famous jewelry designer made your vintage pieces, there is a chance that they have gone up in value. Usually this happens with up-and-coming jewelry makers who suddenly hit the big times. The early pieces may be valuable based simply on the maker’s reputation.

Sell for scrap. Ardent fans of Saturday Night Fever remember the gold chain craze of the time. It may be difficult to find someone willing to relive the look. Even so, if your gold chains feature a 24-karat stamp, you can make money simply because of the gold content of the pieces. Since 14-karat pieces only offer 58-percent purity, it takes more of these chains to make a profit.

Head for the refiner.When you have a lot of gold, bypass the scrap dealer. Those companies that offer to buy your gold pay you a lower price and then head for the refiner. Eliminate the intermediary and have your gold melted down yourself. Get paid based on the purity of the product.

Consider an auction.For a large selection of varied pieces, an auction house may be a good choice. While it is true that you have to pay for the privilege of selling your jewelry there, the auction house’s reputation brings in the bidding clientele. If your pieces are unique enough to turn heads, a local auctioneer can help you with the sale. Mind you, the likes of Sotheby’s do not sell anything that does not have a value of at least $5,000. Set your sights a bit lower for vintage pieces that do not come close to this cost.

Sell by consignment.In some cases, vintage jewelry just needs to be exposed to the right clientele. While an upscale jeweler may not attract the types of buyers who would fawn over your whimsical vintage pieces, a boutique that specializes in one-of-a-kind clothes and objets d’art could generate this kind of foot traffic on a daily basis. Look around for places with an inventory that would complement your items, and discuss your consignment terms with the store manager. For the right pieces, even store managers who have not done consignment sales before might give it a shot.

It always pays to be patient when selling vintage pieces. If you do not have to sell right now, it may be to your advantage to hold on to the pieces for another five years or so. Keep checking the market and see if supply and demand has sufficiently changed for your vintage items to fetch the prices you are willing to accept.
