Buyer Beware? How About Buyer Aware?

Gold prices continued to trade sideways near $990 overnight, as little in the way of fresh news was digested by the trade. Aside from yesterday slump in the Dow, which spilled over into losses in the Nikkei as well, players had little to choose from as a motivator to load up on more bullion. The gold ETF is reflecting the same wait-and-see attitude with a stall at the 1,029 tonne level for the third session. While the current range ($975 to $1005) is not extraordinarily wide, the metal has shown the ability to run the entire course during a single trading session - if news flows warrant. The market's bias -for the moment- is towards lower levels, and such tests should actually be welcomed, lest the speculative setup for a harder fall resulting from nonstop/non-backed and filled gains seems more appetizing.

Tips for selling gold

With gold prices hitting $1,000 an ounce last week, more people are thinking of selling. Here are some tips:

• Before selling, get an estimate. Certified appraisers can be found through the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers and the American Society of Appraisers.
• Selling for scrap means that the final price will not reflect the craftsmanship, antique value or aesthetics of the jewelry.
• The price is based on a troy ounce of 24-karat gold, the pure form of the metal. Divide the karat of your jewelry by 24 for the percentage purity. For example, 18k is 75% pure.
• The karat stamp on jewelry should be used as a gauge, but can be inaccurate. For example, 12k gold is often mismarked at 14k.
• Old jewelry can be sold at consignment shops or online. Jewelry stores tend to offer better prices than pawnshops and most mail-in operations.

Jewelry Time Periods: Georgian Period

The Georgian Period extends roughly from 1714-1830, which includes the reigns of four English Kings named George.

Jewelry during this time was all handmade by skilled artisans and pieces from this era are very rare today. It was a time of upheaval, with the French Revolution, American Revolution and Napoleonic Wars taking place.

Gold and diamonds were scarce during this time period, so alternatives like glass “paste” copies of diamonds were created as well as other white colored stones. Garnets, pearls, and coral were used very often, while carving gemstones was very popular. Women often worn bracelets in pairs and earrings were worn long with hair kept upswept.

Jeweled arm bands worn high on the arm were popular near the beginning of the time period, with a change to more delicate jewelry happening towards the end.

Gold Rises to Eight-Week High as Dollar Slides; Silver Gains

Dec. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Gold prices rose to the highest in almost eight weeks as a sliding dollar boosted the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative asset. Silver also gained.

Gold has jumped 9.9 percent this week as the dollar dropped 4 percent against a weighted basket of six major currencies. The metal reached a record in March as the greenback headed for an all-time low against the euro.

“The dollar seems to be under a lot of pressure and there’s still uncertainty to the economic outlook, and that’s giving a lift to gold,” said Stephen Platt, a commodity analyst at Archer Financial Services Inc. in Chicago. “Gold has held up better than any asset off the uncertain monetary outlook.”

What is nicer than the sight of one piece of antique jewelry?

A touch of history ... Typical regional Dutch Victorian golden filigree earrings.

Though filigree has become a special branch of jewel work in modern times, it was anciently part of the ordinary work of the jeweler. A. Castellani states, in his "Memoir on the Jewellery of the Ancients" (1861), that all the jewelry of the Etruscans and Greeks (other than that intended for the grave, and therefore of an unsubstantial character) was made by soldering together and so building up the gold rather than by chiselling or engraving the material.

In Holland this type of jewelry was rather popular too, especially for the many region distinctive styles Holland had till the end of the 19th Century. By the look at their jewelry it was possible to know a lot about the wearer, his or her marital status, religion, which part of the Netherlands they came from, even the little regions. There are still a few Dutch cities where you can find older women wearing their region specific dress but it's to be expected this will be gone within one or two generations.

Because of their delicate nature, not many of this type of earrings have survived over the years. Something we as antique jewelry dealers notice as we hardly ever find them anymore.

TECHNIQUE : filigree and granulation - This jewel features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin golden wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques
demand very high skills and precision from the maker.

Regional Dutch Jewelry

Regional Dutch Jewelry or as they say in the Netherlands: streeksieraden.

The two jewels depicted here originate from Walcheren (Zeeland) and are manufactured during the 19th century. Most pieces of this type of jewelry, if not all, are all made in 14K gold.

These jewels have a special significance, as in those days one could not only tell the precise origin of a person simply by looking at what he was wearing but also what religion that person had, if she was married or not and well-to-do or not. Indeed, every Dutch village had its own costume and decoration. The jewelry was set almost exclusively with blood coral (from the Mediterranean Sea) and garnets originating from Bohemia).

Most of the times the clasps were made in gold filigree. (Filigree is in fact thin golden wire plain, twisted or plaited into refined motifs. This technique demands very high skills and precision from the maker.) People used to wear these jewels mostly on Sundays or holidays.

Basically in 1900, there were 10 different areas in the Duch province of Zeeland (the richest in terms of clothing variety) to which, very precise, jewels are to be attributed: Tholen, Noord-Beveland, Zuid-Beveland, Schouwen-Duiveland, Walcheren, Arnemuiden, Nieuw en St-Joosland Axel, Hulst and Cadzand.

Today, only 3 areas keep traditional clothing: Walcheren, Arnemuiden and Zuid-Beveland, although nowadays, mostly worn by elder women and people in folkloric dance groups.
