A Beginner’s Guide to Diamond Cuts

When a diamond comes from the mine, it is a misshapen piece of rock that may not look very imposing. It takes on its shape and brilliance only after diamond cutters have plied their trade. When combined with carat weight, clarity and color, the cut is a major determining factor of a diamond’s retail value.

Since diamond cutting has its roots in the Middle Ages, it is sometimes possible to ascertain the age of a stone by the cut it initially received. Cutting ensured the creation of facets, which of course increased the luster of the gem. One of the oldest cuts is the point cut. It creates an octahedron, which specifies eight triangular facets with a point at the apex and another at the antapex.

Approximately one-hundred years later, diamond cutters began altering the point cut by removing almost half of the octahedron. Naming this creation the table cut, some artisans improved on it by adding a culet rather allowing the pointy end of the bottom to remain. They also added four more corner facets. To separate this cut from the table cut, they would refer to it as the old single cut.

The year 1476 marked the time that Flemish diamond cutters began to experiment with facet symmetry. This led to the creation of diamonds in the shapes of briolettes and rosettes. Connoisseurs began to demand more and more facets since this number had a direct impact on the brilliance of a diamond.

The most skilled artisans were happy to comply and in the 17th century, the Mazarin cutemerged. It contained an amazing 17 facets. Vincent Peruzzi improved on this design with the Peruzzi cut, which allowed for the creation of 33 breathtaking crown facets. When girdling became a common practice in the diamond business, the time was ready for the old European cut. This is the type of diamond you may find in antique pieces dating back to the 18th century.

As diamond cutting tools improved, artisans continued to work on altering cuts to meet the demand for increased brilliance. Buyers were looking for diamonds that reflected the most amount of white light and were not afraid to pay hefty sums for just the right gems. This led to a revolutionary discovery by Polish diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky. Working in 1919, this artisan applied mathematics to the art of diamond cutting. He sought to maximize brilliance and fire in the stones by playing with facet symmetry, quantity and location.

The results of his finding have revolutionized the presentation of diamonds. While the round brilliant cut is now common, back in history it presented an unheard of 58 facets. Jewelry makers took the new understanding of diamond cutting and created a variety of fancy cuts that appealed to buyers throughout the decades. There is the boat-shaped marquise cut, the trillian, the pear cut and the step cut, which was a favorite during the Art Deco period.

Guide to Buying Vintage Diamonds

The idea of owning vintage diamonds is very attractive to many jewelry collectors and lovers of unique wearable art. There is just something special about owning a stone that has held a personal importance to someone else. While vintage diamonds maintain their charm and good looks over decades and centuries – after all, you cannot melt down these stones like you could the gold settings they came in – there are still a few misconceptions to clear up to prevent buyer’s remorse in the future.

Vintage does not equal antique. An antique diamond should be at least 100 years old. Although some retailers set the bar lower at the 50-year mark, most agree that 100 years is a good starting point. Strict adherence to the terminology limits the time period for vintage diamonds to fall between 1960 and 1979, which may coincide with the estate jewelry designation. If you go a bit further back in time, you are possibly looking at a retro diamond. At the onset of your browsing or retail transaction, make sure that you understand the seller’s use of the terminology. It is not unheard of for a seller to group all resale diamonds into the vintage category, even if they have been cut just a year or two ago. In other cases, the stone may be relatively new but the setting may qualify for the vintage designation.

Ask for the GIA certificate. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) issues certificates for diamonds and plenty of vintage pieces come with one. That said, some do not feature this desirable attribute and you have to rely on the seller’s gemologist to grade the diamond you are interest in. In this case, it is always wise to ask for a written guarantee. The jewelry seller must be clear about the stone’s size and carat weight. The professional should also put in writing the color and clarity of the vintage diamond.

No damage. A vintage diamond should show no signs of wear. Since the material is extremely hard, there can be no scratches, nicks and other problems. While the setting may have taken a bit of abuse, the stone itself must be free from damage.

Attractive settings and cuts. Early vintage pieces may feature smaller diamonds in textured yellow gold settings. Round brilliants were a common choice among jewelry makers.

Of course, when you look at the Victorian rose cutreproductions that may be manufactured in any era, you might wonder why you should bother going for a genuinely vintage ring in the first place. The answer is simple. You want to stand out from the crowd and most vintage diamonds come in their original settings. Unless you buy loose diamonds, your vintage jewelry piece easily becomes a conversation starter.

The first lab-produced gem stones were already made in the 19th Century !Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil was a French chemist (1856-1913). He invented a type of blowpipe (chalumeau) with which he was the first to lab produce rubies. This process is also sometimes referred to as 'flame fusion'. His results were published in 1904. The apparatus is still used today (sometimes in banks of several hundred units) to make synthetic varieties of corundum and other synthetic gemstones.

The sign of springtime!

ANTWERP, March 28 (Reuters) - In Friesland, the Northern part of Holland, it is an old tradition to offer the first found plover's egg in the springtime to the Queen. This first found egg (called in Dutch: "eerste kievitsei") is a symbol for the beginning of the springtime. So, still today although forbidden in the rest of Europe but allowed in Friesland on cultural historical grounds, people hunt for the first egg.

The Gardener of Adin, not aware of this yearly contest, stumbled upon a nest full of eggs when weeding the Garden of Adin, becoming the unintentional winner of this folkloric event.

So it was that blizzard came up at evening and covered the Garden of Adin, and in the morning the snow lay all around the camp. And when the layer of mist lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small sparkling substance, as fine as frost on the ground. And the Gardener picked it up and he was happy.

Although Marilyn Monroe sang about them in 1953, diamonds are thought to have first been recognized and treasured as gemstones and religious icons in ancient India (where they were mined too). The usage of diamonds in engraving tools also dates to early human history. The name diamond is derived from the ancient Greek "adámas" meaning "unbreakable, untamed".

In 1475 Lodewyk (Louis) van Berquem, a Flemish stone-polisher from Bruges, Belgium, introduced the concept of absolute symmetry in the placement of facets on the stone. 17th century French jeweler, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 -1689, and also with Belgian roots), was one of the early pioneer's of diamond trade with India. In his book "The Six Voyages of Jean-Baptist Tavernier" he documented many historically significant diamond cuts.

Popularity of diamonds has risen since the 19th century because of increased supply, improved cutting and polishing techniques and growth in the world economy.
