Antique Silver -Monteiths

Monteith.  Not a word you hear often or an item you hear much  about.   Ok...  What is a Monteith?

They are considered a wine accessory.  Monteiths were vessels or large footed bowls with notched rims  that were used to chill drinking cups.  The scalloped rims were removable on some examples.  This offfered the option of a punch bowl or in the case of very large examples they became spacious cisterns for chilling bottles.  So named after a Scotsman called Monteith (or possibly Monteigh) that had a fondness for ruffled edges on his cloak.

These vessels were made from various materials including wood, copper, porcelain and silver.  Silver was the predominate material for the bowls.  Monteiths have been used for almost as long as wine coolers and buckets.    A silver Monteith with English hallmarks has been documented with a date of 1684/1685.

Popular through the last two decades of the 17th Century; cups were suspended by the foot from the scalloped edges in ice water in order to chill them.  Large and ornate with decorative scalloped edging; the bowls held court on grand carved sideboards at parties of the affluent.   After all, it was only the affluent that could afford them.

As customs and fashion ebb and flow; the use of silver cups faded and glass became the choice for serving wine or other spirts.   The use of the grand scalloped bowls diminished.  Today, Monteiths are mainly seen in museums; however, fine examples can be found at major auction houses and a few well known antique shops.

Below are a few examples from the  Albert & Victoria Museum in London.   Their website makes a visit so easy, no plane tickets or hotel reservations, just click the link.

Thanks Vintage Style

I have made this vintage looking card to say thanks to Deepti from Catchy Crafts for sending me the candy and .... she also sent me a tag and a cute cupcake card for get well soon wishes (so sweet of you Deepti) !

Beige and Brown are prime colors in this card also there is White to highlight some parts.  I enjoyed making this card so much.  I have done lots of tearing and fraying also curled the top right corner of the page.

The lady in the image is so beautiful and I printed this image from Google.  Another technique that I have done here is tea dying. The ribbon, paper lace and fabric for the flower, they all were white and they look so lovely afterwards.

My favorite part I have recycled the paper from real estate pamphlet/Booklet and I think the paper is real pretty.

Get lucky this Thanksgiving

Get lucky this Thanksgiving

Art Deco brooch luck token gold ruby and diamonds horse shoe from the antique jewelry collection of Adin Antique Jewelry Store, Antwerp, Belgium
(Click the picture to see all our luck token jewelry.)

Throughout the centuries wishbones have been used for all sorts of superstitious practices, like long-run weather forecasting or even predicting how a war would end. Tradition has it that Etruscans and Romans touched a dried furcula (Latin term for wishbone, meaning "little fork") as they made a wish.

The Romans introduced this practice into Great Britain and from there the early settlers brought the tradition to America.

But why let your luck depend on a wishbone? Get instantly lucky (and happy) with this beautiful Art Deco horse shoe brooch or some of our other antique luck tokens.

Happy Christmas

This is a Christmas card that I have made.. in bright Christmas colors..

The bear image a from 'from me to you' die cut pack.'  I stamped the lace border and threaded the ribbon through and added some punched snowflakes as if the bear is looking at snowfall.

I resisted the urge to add flowers and more stuff and kept it simple as there are so many snowflakes and flowers in the background.

Challenges:
BGC - use red , green and a pinch of black colors
Hands to heart challenge - Christmas theme
Itsy Bitsy - Kiss
Crafters Corner Challenge - Die cut / punch and stamp

An "expert" opinion on emerald

EMERALD

High class antique engagement ring with diamonds and top quality emerald from the antique jewelry collection of Adin Antique Jewelry Store, Antwerp, Belgium
(Click the picture to see all our antique emerald jewelry.)

Recently we found an antique book on gemstones written by what we consider to be an "expert". We just would like to share with you some of his revealing insights. This week we share his knowledge on emeralds.

"Greener than green is the emerald!" Thus speaks the old magician in his book. "This stone suffers no unchastity! To even such degree that if one weakens a virgin, the stone shatters! Therefore this precious stone can also be used as a drug to resist lovepotions of lewd women."

Terrible, those lewd women in the middle-ages... a good thing that doctors had such strong remedies against them.

Some more revealing insights on other gemstones from our new found "expert" will follow soon.

The Adin Carrot Diet, one of life's root necessities

The Adin Carrot Diet

One of life's root necessities

Belle Epoque hand-made platinum necklace pendant with big pear shaped diamond from the antique jewelry collection of Adin Antique Jewelry Store, Antwerp, Belgium
(Click the picture to see this bulky carrot pendant.)

Is it possible that consistent moderate weight loss could reliably result from a diet as simple as buying more Adin Carats? Yes!

The basic rule of this diet is to buy a few carats at or near the beginning of every celebration. Why should this work? This works because a bulky carat leaves no room at the party's end for the extra ice-cream or cheesecake. That saves a considerable amount of calories per party, which translates to a weight loss of more carats then obtained from Adin.

Adin Carrots are healthy additions you can make to any list in your diet. Indeed, these root necessities come with wholesome health benefiting compounds such beta-caratenes, vitaminA(antique) and vitaminD(diamond) in ample amounts.

Adin Carats are freely obtainable at www.adin.be. No doctor's prescription needed!

Weddings

Back home from Florida where my son was married on St. Pete Beach.  This was our second wedding in less than four months!  Our youngest daughter was married in Manhattan over July 4th weekend.  We have been keeping family and friends very busy these last few months.  From now on they get to choose their vacation destinations.  It has been an interesting six months; finishing our cottage in Aiken,  moving in, and two weddings.

Wedding favors, specialty items, and wedding ideas abound on the web today.  One word of caution; you may become sleep deprived in a short span of time once you begin the search.  I found myself checking out website after website then glancing at the time..oh dear 2am…well just a few more pages…oh  dear 3am…well one more page.   If only I could have convinced my husband and dog to sleep just a bit longer on those mornings.  They are both early risers and showed me no mercy.

My daughter introduced me to Etsy and Pinterest when she was planning her wedding.  Yes, I am quite behind the times, most everyone has heard of the two sites.   So I thought I would share some items I came across while planning the rehearsal dinner for my son and his fiancée which was held at the Don Cesar in St. Pete.  The dinner was in an outdoor pavilion and the wedding was on the beach at sunset.  The Don is quite pink and known to locals as the “Pink Palace” so we went with all white linens accented with sand colored burlap runners.  We ordered gallons of sea shells and starfish which were bleached wedding white.  Piles of shells, starfish, and dozen of glass votives decorated all the tables.  Before saying goodnight to our guests we passed out favor bags and encouraged everyone to fill them with shells and starfish.   If yo u decide on a beach wedding; happy shelling on the web!

Carousel

Hey guys, I did a guest post at my friend Zografia's blog " made by Bisozozo ".  She is a wonderful person and you must check out her blog she makes very Stylish stuff from jewelry to lamp or anything!

I'm excited to share this post both because I did some recycling and I made something useful!  We have all seen Carousels, they are so fascinating, shiny and fun to ride but this not just a Carousel it is also a Jewelry storage system.

First I decided how I wanted to construct the cardboard Carousel shape then I incorporated jewelry storage ideas into it.

At the bottom it has a round box to store jewelry ..It has flowers on one side and butterflies on the other..

Then the top part can also be removed, I made it in a way so that I can keep my Bangals here.  As the unicorns are attached to the top part of the Carousel, bangals can be easily added or taken out without any hassle

So here are the construction details:

Bottom part - first I created a round box and it's lid

Middle part - Take a cylinder shape (I recycled one from foil paper packaging) make a 1 inch slit on it. Bend the sides and glue them on the lid of the box so as to attach the cylinder and the lid together.

To cover it and secure the cylinder shape in place I glued a cardboard circle , with a hole in the middle to slide through the cylinder, on top of the lid.

Top part - I cut out a hexagon shape from cardboard, glued 6 ribbons on it and on top of it I glued a cone with a bead on it. This time again  I kept a hole in the hexagon shape to fix the cylinder  there and then I started decorating it ...

I had an amazing time designing, creating and decorating this project and I hope you enjoyed viewing it !!!

Thank you!

An "expert" opinion on AMETHYST

An "expert" opinion on

AMETHYST

Estate white gold bracelet with big amethyst from the antique jewelry collection of Adin Antique Jewelry Store, Antwerp, Belgium
(Click the picture to see all our antique amethyst jewelry.)

Recently we found an antique book on gemstones written by what we consider to be an "expert". We just would like to share with you some of his revealing insights. On amethysts he writes:

"Amethyst proved itself against witchcraft, which is still believed to be the cause of many accidents today. One should engrave the sun and moon in an Amethyst and wrap it in the feathers of a swallow. Wearing this amulet protects the wearer and his/her property against black magic."

And he follows:

"Because Amethyst is the birthstone for Pisces it is closely associated with Neptune and thus with all that has to do with water. Therefore, sailors will do well to providing themselves with an amethyst, so Neptune will be merciful on them. Amethyst also protects against inundation, flooding and risk of undermining."

We at Adin rather have our customers taking swimming lessons and buying amethyst as present for each other than using it for the powers proclaimed by the "expert" in this antique book.

Some more revealing insights on other gemstones from our new found "expert" will follow soon.
