The winking portrait brooch

The Adin Museum Of Fairy Tale Artifacts proudly presents:

Pre Victorian painted portrait brooch

"The winking portrait brooch"

Once upon a time... there was a princess who couldn't stop winking. The best doctors in the land were consulted but nobody could cure the princess. Then it was ordained that the man who could cure the princess would marry her. Needless to say, this attracted hundreds and hundreds of fortune seekers but no one could help the winking princess.

Till one day a poor painter came in. He told the king he could trap the wink in a painting. The king, not knowing what else to do decided to let the painter have his way. The painter did as he promissed, then married the princess and they lived on happily ever after.

It is only recently that Adin Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts discovered this painting in a brooch. When watching really closely you might still see her wink. Chief conservator of the Museum, Mr. Elkan Wijnberg told us that strangely enough once out of the museum the brooch stops winking.

The brooch might still be available for purchase in the museum for a fairy price.

January Design Challenge

Each month, the Designers Challenge Club at Scrapbook Generation gets together to share what they have made from the previous month’s "challenge" kit. It is amazing to see all the different things each person has done with the materials they received.

The January kit had some fun stuff to work with. It featured the Mia Collection from Crate Paper and included 2-sided papers (a few are shown below), die-cut papers, matching alphabet stickers, and some glittery borders and die-cuts. Debbie also included in the kit some chipboard shapes from Bazzill and perfectly-matching buttons from Basic Grey.

I wanted to do something for Valentine's day with my materials, so I chose the My Word Love Album by BoBunny. I also found a great poem titled "Three Wishes on Valentines Day" on the internet. No author was listed, so if you know who wrote it, I would like to give them credit. The poem is broken up and runs throughout the book as a Valentines message to my husband, my two daughters, and their families.

I used some old lace for trim and cut out some chipboard hearts to use through out this book. The first paragraph of the poem reads:

"If I could have three wishes
and wishes did come true;
I would wish for Blessings,
for each to always follow you."

For something a little different, I printed the photographs on fabric and pulled the edges a little so they would be frayed. I took some reproduction vintage postcards and tore, bent, and inked them until they looked old and forgotten.

"I would wish for much laughter,
To fill your hearts and home
And memories to surround you
Whenever you're alone."

I made an embellishment from some pink crepe paper. It was too pink and looked "new" so I aged it with a few drops of bleach. I placed it on some paper towels to absorb any moisture from the bleach. After getting the look I wanted and while it was still just a little damp, I applied some glitter glue around the edges. It really looked like it had been stuck between some pages in a book for years when finished.

"Then I'd wish you Patience,
To forgive what might go wrong
I'd wish for love and peace and joy
To follow all day long."

"I'd wish for you good health,
Friends and family galore
And when you have it all
I'd even wish you even more…"

"I would wish for prayers,
To give back unto myself;
As long as you are all happy,
I'd wish for nothing else."

"If I could have my wishes,
And if wishes did come true;
I'd wish for years of happiness,
And I'd give them all to you."

"For just to see contentment,
On your faces and know you're fine;
Would truly satisfy me,
And bring joy to this heart of mine."

Life is a struggle but your love is my force

The Adin Museum Of Fairy Tale Artifacts proudly presents:

Diamond arrow brooch perforating three solid bars of lapis lazuli

"Life is a struggle but your love is my force"

Our latest theme, the “once upon a time” sequence seems to be stirring up romantic inspiration among our readers. One of them had himself inspired by the pictured brooch to write the following romantic fairy tale...

Once upon a time... there was a poor paladin with a pure heart who's name is forgotten long time ago but the memories to him remain intact. The poor paladin loved and was loved in secret by the princess of seas and lands. To reach her kingdom and be blessed by her beauty forever, 3 massive walls had to be conquered. Trust, Faith and Loyalty were their names. The paladin overtook these obstacles with persistence and finally reached the princess to spend the rest of their lives together in loving harmony. This brooch immortalizes the paladin's journey.

With many thanks to François!

Happy Valentine's Day!

O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June,
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
and the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,

Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.

Agnes Sorel, the link between jewelry and food

The Adin Museum Of Fairy Tale Artifacts proudly presents:

Victorian romantic brooch pendant with painted miniature of Agnes Sorel on ivory and paste stones

The link between jewelry and food

Once upon a time... long long time ago, somewhere in the 15th Century, there was a woman at the French court who introduced a trend that some 600 years later would bring Janet Jackson legal trouble.

True, but we only have one charming reason to believe that the woman depicted in this 19th Century brooch/pendant is Agnès Sorel (1422 – 1450). Agnès Sorel was twenty years old when she was first introduced to King Charles. At that time, she was holding a position in the household of Rene I of Naples, Charles' brother-in-law. As reflected in art of the day, she was an extraordinarily beautiful young woman, and was also extremely intelligent. The French king was immediately smitten by her charms and took her as his mistress; he even gave her the Château de Loches (where he had been persuaded by Joan of Arc to be crowned King of France) as her private residence. She entered the French court in 1444 and introduced the single bare-breasted decolletage becoming a real trendsetter for many noble ladies following her example.

For reasons we do not know of, several dishes are named after her (a real attacker is the Agnès Sorel Cream Soup). She really got noticed; not a bad achievement for a woman who lived so long ago for such a short period of time.

CHA in Review

Tammy and I stayed and watched Claudine Hellmuth's demo at the Ranger booth for a long time. She showed us how to use the new Studio Extra Time Medium, her Sticky Back Canvas, and all kinds of cool techniques--way more than my mind will ever remember. I love her products! Here is a link to the demo she did at CHA on the Extra Time Medium. I will try and find some other videos showing how to use her other products and share them with you.

Here is the display showing the Studio Paints, Gesso, Multi-Medium, and the Sticky-Back Canvas artist line by Claudine Hellmuth. After seeing the difference in her paints and the ones I have, I immediately ordered all the colors when I got home! (Couldn't help it--there are some things a girl just has to have)

CHA in Review

I am a little slow getting photos posted about CHA. First of all, it was wonderful! Tammy and I took lots of photos--too many to try and post. I will share a few of the things I especially liked, but in no way representing all the great new products that we saw.

This is the way we walked to the convention center the first day. Very pretty!

Over 600 exhibitors--I couldn't hardly wait to get there!

Simply Renee, Inc. was one of my favorite stops. I love their organizational tools! I didn't get a very good photo of it, but one of their new products is a 6 ft. Clip It Up Floor Model.

The Clip It Up team displayed their products with some gorgeous antique items. It was very attractive.

I really enjoyed meeting Renee Hull. If you would like to keep up with their new products, organizational tips, etc., they have a blog: http://simplyreneeinc.blogspot.com/ Another view of the floor model is behind Renee. It will be available in May. I didn't get a photo of it, but they also have a new attachment to their ribbon organizer that is really cool. Check it out!

This is the Graphic 45 display. They had an amazing display of all their new products and samples of ways to use them. They also have a blog and a great design team that daily posts news and ideas on how to use their beautiful papers: http://g45papers.typepad.com/

Three new Graphic 45 papers were featured: A Proper Gentleman, Le' Romantique, and On the Boardwalk.

A layout using On the Boardwalk paper collection (my personal favorite).

Nikki Sivils, Scrapbooker is from Springfield, MO! How cool is that! It was nice meeting Nikki and Dan Sivils. I really enjoyed seeing their product collections first hand--it is obvious that a lot time is spent developing products that a scrapbooker or cardmaker would fall in love with.

Nikki also has a blog if you would like to keep up with new products, including lots of scrapbook and card layouts, and how-to: http://nikkisdoghouse.blogspot.com/

How I love vintage-style stuff! This was the Melissa Frances booth. Very nice--I visited there several times, actually.

Beautiful!

I took this photo to remember the crepe paper! I loved it and have to have some. It is not like the crepe paper you find in the local party department. This is a heavy grade with perfect texture--just like it used to be!

I just loved these! The ruffles and rosettes were made with the crepe paper.

Kimber McGray is author to Remember This: Fresh Ideas to Scrapbook the Year (available June 2010). She also recently authored the book Scrapbook Secrets: Shortcuts and Solutions Every Scrapbooker Needs to Know (May 2009).

Sherry Steveson and Tammy. Sherry is the author of When Life Gives You Lemons: Turning Sour Photos into Sweet Scrapbook Layouts (October 2008) and The Scrapbook Embellishment Handbook (August 2009). It was fun getting to know some of these authors.

How fitting to end this post with some bling! Decorated manikins and dress forms were everywhere! Wished I had taken photos of more of them. Stay tuned--more about CHA to come.

Dyan Reaveley has a passion for teaching art and crafts -- and she is very good at it! She represents Ranger Industries as Senior Educator in Europe. As an often-visitor to her blog, I see that she is a very busy and sought-after lady. At the show, I watched one of her demos on Perfect Pearls and really enjoyed it. One of the parts I liked best was using a template with the Perfect Pearls. The results were awesome! If you would like to see this demo, it is available on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnWVDV4FM6Q

Ah! Lovely Snow!

I just had to post this story about snow today. It seems appropriate with everyone getting so much right now. This has been passed around through email where I work for several years. It seems someone digs it out every winter and sends it around (sometimes it is me). I would love to know who the author is and give them credit--it is so funny! Note: The "original" is dated the month of December with reference to Christmas. I have edited it a tiny bit to fit the month of February. If you would like a copy of the original, send me an email and I will send it to you

"February 8 (6:00 PM):
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our coffee and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

February 9:
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

February 12:
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have lots more! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man I'm glad he's our neighbor.

February 14:
Snow, lovely snow! Eight inches fell last night! The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

February 15:
20 inches in the forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

February 16:
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like crazy. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

February 17:
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. Boy do I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room!

February 20:
Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the nasty stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Blasted snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

February 22:
Bob was right! Hard to believe, but 13 more inches of that white mess fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August! Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to use the bathroom. By the time I got undressed, went and dressed again I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying.

February 23:
Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0.

February 24:
Six inches! The snow was packed so hard by the snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack! If I ever catch the guy who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his fingernails. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to watch television with her, but I was busy watching for the snowplow.

February 25:
Unbelievable! 20 more inches of the messy slop tonight. Snowed in! The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. Gee, I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot.

February 26:
Still snowed in. Why the heck did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

February 27:
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze.

February 28:
Warmed up to – 35 degrees. Still snowed in. That woman is driving me crazy!!!!!

March 1:
Ten more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

March 2:
Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. Another 9" predicted.

March 4:
Weatherman says it's the warmest winter they have ever had, but looks like a cold streak is coming.

March 5:
Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

March 9:
I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?"

How to tell a True Princess?

The Adin Museum Of Fairy Tale Artifacts proudly presents:

Truly magnificent Art Deco clip, typical Japonism, coral and carre cut onyx

How to tell a True Princess?

Once upon a time... there was a queen-mother that wanted to check if her future daughter-in-law was the real princess she claimed to be.

She went into the bed-room and hid there a beautiful Art Deco clip. In the morning the princess was asked how she had slept. "Oh, very badly!" said she. "I hardly closed my eyes all night. I felt a presence of sheer beauty."

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that!

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a 'real' princess; and the clip was put in the Adin Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts, where it may still be seen, provided no one has bought it!

Something Special . . . .

Today I received the "Let Your Art Have Wings" stamp set from Wendy Vecchi of Studio 490 Art. I won it! I commented on one of her blog posts recently and was randomly selected to receive one of her new stamps for 2010! How great is that! If you are interested in seeing all of Wendy's new stamps, you may contact Simon Says Stamp! or Stampers Anomyous. There are several places that sell the Studio 490 Art stamps, but those are just a couple of my favorites. Thanks again, Wendy.

What was Napoleon holding in his right hand?

The Adin Museum Of Fairy Tale Artifacts reveals historic secret:

Truly magnificent Art Deco clip, typical Japonism, coral and carre cut onyx

What was Nappy holding in his right hand?

Once upon a time... it must have been shortly before Valentine's day when Napoleon's court painter took an instant snapshot of the emperor when he was on his way to the woman he loved. Napoleon with the jewel in his right hand, in a reflex, hid the jewel under his waistcoat.

For a long time the existence of this jewel has been a source of dispute between jewelry historians around the world. It's only shortly that Mr. Elkan Wijnberg, chief conservator of the Adin Antique Jewelry Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts revealed what it was.

Mr. Wijnberg told us: "Napoleon, being way ahead of his time, loved jewelry from the 1950's. And what was better then to express his emotions to the woman of his dreams then by offering her a pendant with the romantic text: 'Because I love you more and more each day, today more than yesterday but less than tomorrow'. It is not a public secret that Napoleon, a man of little words, prefered to speak French above English thus the text was translated into '+ qu'hier et - que demain'."

Now it is with great pride and ultimate joy that the Adin Antique Jewelry Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts exibits the actual piece of jewelry that Napoleon held in his right hand on this picture.
