The Lieberfarb story started early in the 1900s with a family-owned wedding band manufacturing business. Focusing on a small selection of bands, this business maintained a solid market share for decades to come. In 1971, Mark Schonwetter purchased the Lieberfarb business and took the jewelry collection to new heights. Yet this story is one that World War II Europe almost prevented from being written at all.
Schonwetter grew up as a Jewish child in Poland’s Brzostek. Of the thriving Jewish community that numbered almost 500 souls, only five Jews survived the Nazi regime. Among them were Schonwetter, his sister and his mother.
Coming to the United States in 1961, Schonwetter set to work at the jewelry factory of Wright & Lato. Starting out as a broom pusher and working his way up to supervisor, he showed his mettle early on. When he went into business for himself in 1971, he started out with a collection of 12 rings. On the advice of a Philadelphia jeweler, he began expanding the collection. The results of this well-received advice can be seen today. There are wedding and engagement rings, men’s diamond rings as well as diamond anniversary bands.
Schonwetter credits the help he received from his daughters Ann and Isabella for the development of a full-service bridal jewelry company that has strongly established the Lieberfarb brand.
Engagement ring sets.Available in platinum, gold and palladium, the rings of these sets complement one another after the nuptials. While the bride-to-be accepts the engagement ring at the proposal, the matching wedding ring completes the set at the wedding. The edges are flattened so that the rings will fit right next to one another on the ring finger.
Three-stone rings.Made of platinum and gold, the three-stone design features a main diamond and two side stones. Cuts vary by size and model.
Men’s diamond rings.Masculine in execution, these rings come in palladium, platinum and gold. Featuring diamonds and - in some cases - intricate etchings on the surface, these designs are easy to pick out in a crowded room.
Men’s two-tone wedding rings. Adding a contemporary twist to the designs, two-tone wedding bands combine the aesthetic simplicity of gold with an extravagant play on color tone.
It is clear that Schonwetter is in love with the idea of love. A gander at Lieberfarb Jewelry’s Facebook page shows that he suggests ring designs for the famous leading men of the silver screen. In addition, he recounts hopelessly romantic vignettes from the lives of Rock ‘n Roll’s greatest song writers. His passion, “for a love that lasts a lifetime” is not just the slogan of the business but in actuality a calling Schonwetter seeks to fulfill—one ring at a time.
