Elf-like, a classic style, and an elegant neck defined actress Audrey Hepburn. Moviegoers loved her on the screen and adored her for her charity work—perhaps the very first actress to become so involved in post WWII charity work that she was globally recognized for her efforts.
Born on May 4, 1929 in Ixelles, Belgium with a given name of Audrey Kathleen Ruston, Audrey’s nickname was Edda van Hemmstra. With an English banker father and a Dutch baroness for a mother, Audrey Hepburn was born into blue-blood society. She attended private schools and ended up landing in London on a ballet scholarship and began modeling. While her gracefulness as a model was instantly seen in every photograph she appeared in, a movie producer saw Audrey and she was signed for a small part in the 1951 film Young Wives’ Tales.
Hollywood beckoned, however and so the 5-foot, 6-inch actress headed to America and landed her role in Roman Holiday (1953) co-starring Gregory Peck. She was honored with an Oscar for her role in Roman Holidayand quickly became the new “it” girl. Other movies followed—Funny Face (1957), Sabrina (1954), Love in the Afternoon (1957), and The Nun’s Storywhich gained her another Academy Award nomination.
Perhaps film lovers everywhere, however, best remember Audrey Hepburn for her role as Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)—she received a third Academy Award nomination for this delightful role. Next came My Fair Lady (1964), Two for the Road(1967) and a stunning performance in the 1967 film Wait Until Dark—this film gained her a fourth Academy Award nomination.
Audrey Hepburn was married twice; to Mel Ferrer (1954-1968) which ended in divorce but gained her a child (Sean) and to Andrea Dotti (1969-1982), which also ended in divorce but gained a second child (Luca). It was in the late sixties that Hepburn decided to step back from her acting career, only occasionally appearing in films; Robin and Marian (1976) with Sean Connery and Always (1989); her last film.
In 1988 Audrey was appointed a special ambassador to the United Nations UNICEF fund for her work helping children in Africa and Latin America. The charitable Audrey held that commission until her death on January 20, 1993 from cancer.
Of her 31 movies, her leading men were often much older than her and she was known for playing high class society women or “charming characters” who try to wear their troubles lightly. Her voice, wide brown eyes and delicate slim figure made her an icon—in her movies and in the fashion world.
A famous quote from Audrey Hepburn: “I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.”

Many compared Audrey’s style to Jacqueline Kennedy and one reason may be for these enticing diamond earrings. Each earring is pear-shaped and each contains 3.20 carats (CZ) of diamonds which are suspended from a round clear cut (CZ) diamond weighing 1.03 carats.
