Yes, men love jewelry too and while some may prefer tons of gold chains, feathers in the hair (think Steven Tyler) or big gold crosses, there are some general tips for all men, especially the color and type of jewelry they should wear.
The first tip is to wear the same color of metal at a time. For example, never wear a gold watch with silver cuff links. Of course with so much two-toned metal jewelry on the market today, good luck with this tip. Go ahead and mix it up—just watch metal shadings and polishes (finishes).
Now, here's our take on Men's Jewelry and go ahead, add some vintage or estate pieces to your collection!
Silver – Silver falls in the gray group on the color wheel. There are both silver and silver tone jewelry pieces including stainless steel and chrome. Silver jewelry looks best with dark gray or black apparel and suits. Silver is also a great choice for summer as it doesn’t look or feel heavy.
Gold – As a yellow on the color wheel, gold jewelry is best worn with earthy tones or brown apparel. It also goes well with suits of blue and green—think royal blue and hunter green, for example. Watch when pairing your gold as they are available in a variety of shades; some are very dark where others are light and shiny.
Gems – The manliest of men will avoid gems and precious stones at all costs where others love them. There’s certainly nothing wrong with diamonds, onyx or opals in men’s rings. Too much may be considered gaudy but an appropriate sized gem in the ear is an absolute fabulous item to add to your jewelry collection—maybe a few!
Turquoise – For some reason the world looks at turquoise as Southwestern jewelry only when in fact, turquoise dates back a long way—especially the untouched pieces. A turquoise ring set in silver or platinum is very nice. Or, go for the western look and find bolo ties with turquoise, belts embedded in turquoise or a hat with touches of turquoise.
Copper and Bronze – Because these are both on the color wheel as orange hues, copper and bronze are best worn for special occasions. These colors do go nicely, however, with single-colored shirts—especially white and they are fabulous choices for cuff links or tie bars.
We could also talk about leather and bone—even wooden jewelry but these are the types of jewelry best worn for events. For example, if you plan on driving Route 66 on your Harley—wear the leather bracelet. If you’re going to a retreat for the mind and spirit, wooden jewelry should definitely be in your attire. Heading to the Caribbean? Bone jewelry is just fine, especially when matched with colorful beads.
